What are jumbled sentences?

going the are park to we.

Do you have any clue about what the above jumbled sentence says? If you couldn’t understand anything at first glance, don’t worry about it.

Jumbled sentences are composed of a series of words that have not been written in the correct order so that it cannot make a meaningful sentence. Hence you need to crack the original sentence in a logical manner to make it meaningful.

How to structure jumbled sentences?

Now let’s try to rearrange the above jumbled sentence. To do that you have to read and try to comprehend the jumbled sentence and rearrange the words in an understandable manner that makes sense.

going the are park to we.

Look at the words in this jumbled sentence and try to figure out what it is trying to make sense about.

Now look at the nouns, pronouns, verbs, articles and prepositions included in the jumbled sentence.

Usually, we see nouns, proper nouns, pronouns (I, he, she, it, they etc.), relative pronouns (who, whom, which, whose etc.), demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those etc.), verbs, gerunds, prepositions, adverbs, articles (a, an, the) and transitional words (finally, lastly, next, furthermore etc.) in the beginning of a sentence. If the sentence is a question, it starts with an auxiliary verb (am, is, are, was, were etc.), which we also call a helping verb. Therefore, comprehending a long jumbled sentence can be tricky.

Try to understand while reading through the jumbled sentence what should come first. In this case it is the pronoun ‘we’, because if we pick any other word as the first word it is difficult to make a complete meaningful sentence, unless it is a question type sentence.

going the are park to we.

Now look at the remaining words. We have a verb ending with ‘-ing’ form which means we need the help of an auxiliary verb (helping verb) in order to connect it with the pronoun.

Since the pronoun is ‘we’ the auxiliary verb that goes with it is ‘are’. So, now we are able to form a part of the sentence, which is ‘We are going’. (Remember to capitalize the first letter of the first word and other proper nouns if there’s any.)

Now it is easy to rearrange the rest of the letters ’the’, ‘park’, ‘to’. To make the sentence understandable you need the preposition next. Then the article along with the noun makes the next part of the sentence ‘to the park’.

Finally, we have rearranged the words correctly to make a meaningful sentence.

We are going + to the park

We are going to the park.

There is also a second sentence that we can rearrange with this jumbled sentence. However, it is a question type sentence, which is;

Are we going to the park?

If it is a question type jumbled sentence, usually there should be a question mark instead of a full stop, but on some occasions punctuation mark is not given at the end of the sentence.

Tips to rearrange jumbled sentences

Since jumbled sentence questions are relatively simple and easy to answer in exams, arming yourself with quick tips and shortcuts can be extremely beneficial in terms of saving time. Remember the following simple tricks that you can use to efficiently rearrange jumbled sentences:

  • Read the jumbled sentence thoroughly and try to comprehend the concept or what it is talking about.

  • Identify the nouns, pronouns, relative and demonstrative pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, prepositions, gerunds, auxiliary verbs, transitional words etc. in the jumbled sentence.
